ARB WOODCHIP

Arb woodchip (short for arboriculture woodchip) is a byproduct of tree surgery and arborist work. It typically consists of freshly chipped branches, limbs, twigs, and leaves from tree maintenance or removal jobs.

Key Features:

• Fresh and unprocessed: Unlike seasoned woodchip, it often contains a mix of green and woody material.

• Moisture-rich: It has high moisture content because it’s usually not dried or processed.

• Mixed particle size: Chips can vary widely in size and shape.

Used for:

  • Mulching in landscaping or gardens

  • Temporary paths or ground cover

  • Composting or biomass fuel (after further processing)

  • PowerStation’s feedstock

WHOLE TREE CHIP

Whole tree chip is woodchip produced by chipping entire trees, including the stem, branches, and sometimes even leaves or needles, depending on the harvesting method. It is commonly generated in large-scale forestry or land clearance operations.

Key Features:

• Includes all parts of the tree: trunk, branches, and sometimes foliage.

• High bark and foliage content: Leads to higher ash content and potentially lower energy value.

• Moisture content: Usually high if not seasoned or dried.

• Chip size: Variable—can include fine material and larger, rougher pieces unless screened.

Used for:

  • Biomass fuel (after drying/screening)

  • Low-grade energy generation (district heating, industrial boilers)

  • Occasionally used as mulch or ground cover

LOG CHIP

Log chip refers to woodchip produced specifically from processed logs or roundwood, usually the stem or trunk of a tree, without branches, bark-heavy sections, or foliage.

Key Features:

• Clean, uniform material: Made from straight, solid timber (typically softwood or hardwood).

• Low bark content: Compared to whole tree or arb chip.

• High energy value: Due to higher wood-to-bark ratio and often lower moisture (especially if seasoned).

• Consistent chip size: Often processed to meet standards like G30, G50, etc.

Used for:

  • Biomass fuel for high-specification boilers

  • Commercial heating systems requiring clean, high-quality chip

Log chip is often considered premium biomass fuel, especially when dried and screened, because it offers efficient combustion and minimal ash output.
